St. Elias Church was built in 1995 but the parish got started in 1976. The mostly wooden structure was made up of Douglas Fir and Western red cedar and followed the architectural style of "Bokyo" (from the western Ukraine). It was split into three sections (Altar, Sanctuary and Narthex), each topped with a dome. It was a sight to see and famous for its ornate architecture. Unfortunately on the morning of April 5th, 2014 a fire overtook the building and it was destroyed very quickly. More than a dozen fire trucks responded to the two-alarm fire. At this time it's not believed to be an act of arson but an investigation will obviously be conducted. I have passed by this church many times and admired it but never took any photos of it for some reason. It was part of 'Doors Open' last year (which I missed) so I hope some other members will have photos to share here. Until then I found a couple early pictures online to include. I arrived at the scene over nine hours later and it was still smoking and small flames could be seen. I was able to get real close to the building before someone shouted to me that it wasn't safe. After I was done taking photos, two security guards just arrived to help keep people back. Also rolling in was Ontario Hydro to shut off the meter, guess they were a little late to the game. The next day portable fencing went up around the structure but you can still pull in and take a look. Church service went ahead and was moved to a nearby school the next morning.
