This is a Hudson Bay post abandoned in the late 1920(a)s. It was occupied until just prior to the 2nd world war by it(a)s last supervisor. Included is a photo of his gravesite. The site is very overgrown and accessible by boat (canoe) only. The buildings are long gone, except for pieces of the church. Matachewan- is a former gold mining community, located within the Montreal River Watershed. Fort Matachewan, a Hudson(a)s Bay Company trading post that had been established in 1865, was the first white habitation in the region. Originally it was an Ojibway fort, built in the late 1700(a)s or early 1800(a)s, this post served the Indian trappers of the area. At one time, a large tribe lived near the fort. Fort Matachewan was closed in 1920. The rush of 1907 in Elk Lake brought numerous prospectors into the area, searching for more ore deposits. It was around this time when John Moyneur built a log hotel on the present site of Matachewan. The hotel soon became the center of civilization for the area. For more info go to this link:
