The Port Arthur General Hospital was originally built in the early 1930s, and expanded many times between the early 1940's and the mid 1990s. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center was trying to sell the building for redevelopment but the building was neglected, vandalized, and the copper wiring began to disappear. inevitably, the building was demolished in mid 2010. The Port Arthur and McKellar Hospitals were closed in 2004, when they were made obsolete by the opening of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center. Many residents claim that it was a terrible move to locate a new hospital in the center of town when there were two existing facilities that could have been renovated. The current hospital sits atop of boreal muskeg and according to reports, it is also slowly sinking.
