Several years ago the city of Sarnia closed their waterfront Centennial Park Play Area and adjoining DOW People Place outdoor events pavilion due to hazardous chemicals being found in the soil. The tests found asbestos, lead, a number of carcinogenic hydrocarbons and metals, even evidence of household garbage. The solution at the time was to fence off the playground and surrounding area until remediation could take place. For three years it sat a grim reminder of chemical valleys toxic past.
