This one has me guessing. I have been watching this place for years, waiting and hoping for the perfect moment. The house is obviously abandoned and has been for a long time. It sits in an open cattlefield, with the animals grazing close by. The barn is still in use and there is no discreet approach. The farmer that tends to the cattle and fields is only a couple hundred metres away. I needed lots of leaves, no current farming and a quiet approach.
Finally the moment hit me when I decided on an early morning approach on a quiet weekday. I parked a kilometre away and started walking. I walked past the farmers house, with a bottle of water in hand, as though I was out for a morning stroll. He was outside working on a tractor, I waved and said "Good morning" as I continued past his place and onto the abandoned driveway a short distance away, hidden by the trees. I hopped over the electric fence and through the large manure pile, knowing my shoes would be cleaned in the wet grass after my visit. Upon approach to the house, a couple of the cows where startled and ran a few feet away, then I heard what sounded like a door slamming coming from the old farmhouse. Okay I thought, its a bit of a windy day and I know old houses make strange noises. Oddly, most of the windows are still intact.
I entered the house and started to take photos, noticing the rancid smell of animal droppings and urine, and not just from the curious cows outside. There were piles of evidence of racoons and other small critters, and the place was mostly trashed from years of neglect and weathering. While I was checking out the main floor I could here some light scurrying noises upstairs, likely racoons, maybe a squirrel. Even though it was a breezy day, with the windows all intact the smell was atrocious, worse than most places, likely because of the closed and unbroken windows, which was odd considering the condition of the rest of the place. Also I noted that I didn't hear the slamming door that I'd heard when approaching the house a few minutes earlier, but whatever, no worries. I took a few more photos of the main floor and headed upstairs, noticing the usual habit that racoons have of pooping on the steps, and trying not to mess my shoes too much in the fresh stuff. I slowly ascended the steps and heard the floor above me creak and groan as though there was someone walking up there. Huh, I though, weird. I know that no one else would be in here, not in a place in this condition and with the awful smell. I continued up the steps cautiously, cuz you never know when a terrified raccoon is about to make a break for it and push past you on the narrow stairway. I've had this happen a few times, they being more scared than I am, and they never stay long enough to have their pictures taken. As I slowly made my way up the stairs, I took a look around and saw a bedroom door slowly but firmly being closed tight just down the hallway. I stopped dead in my tracks! Raccoons do not close doors. There is no breeze up here. I had just heard the floor creaking previous to this. I saw the door close in slow motion, and the door knob even turned to make the door close as quietly as possible. Wholly crap! Is there someone up there? Do I call out? Do I get the f__k out ASAP? Do I stay and check it out.
I decided quickly that a quiet and hasty retreat was in order. If there really was someone up there, who where they? and how unstable would they be? and would they be dangerous? If they were willing to quietly retreat into the safety of an upstairs bedroom, then I thought it best to also quietly retreat my way out of there, before any unwanted confrontation takes place. I took a few more photos on the way out, but my heart wasn't in it at this point, although it was beating very loudly. For some reason those photos are blurry.

I don't know if I was alone or not, and I'm happy not to find out. If anyone else braves a visit here, be careful, and do not go alone.

Most likely a portal to a different dimension or alternate universe.

That was an exciting read. The turning doorknob is what really had me.
