The Bowmanville Senior Public School

For the last 3 decades of its existence, it was designated as a middle school and housed grade 7 and 8 students. The school closed its doors in 2007 with its closing ceremony held on Saturday, June 16th of that year.

Bowmanville School and its Fire Curse

The Bowmanville Senior Public School opened in 1929. Because of a fire that destroyed a large section of the school, only a portion in the center of the structure as well as the foundations remain of the original building. The fire occurred sometime in the early 70s and the school was rebuilt with 2 new additions in 1974. After it was shut, it saw even more fire incidents, in 2014, there were around 7 or more fire incidents, and two of them took place within 14 days.

Bowmanville School before Demolition

It's currently unclear who currently owns the property at the moment but, after being denied its heritage designation in 2009, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board requested submissions from real estate brokers to sell the building and adjacent lot.

For some time, the location was being used for training by local emergency response teams and such. Various test rounds, blanks as well as proper targets were found all around the building, including some equipment in the gym.

Bowmanville school’s owner decided to demolish the building to use it as a retirement facility, the site that served younger as well as elderly.

This was def. worth driving an hour, however, the vandalism here is just ridiculous. Someone went into the school and somehow got all of the copper out of the walls without anyone noticing.. Needless to say, they tore the place apart getting every last bit of it.

I plan to hit this location next week. It's not suppose to be demo'ed. Some developer bought it and wants to turn it into condos, that was a while ago tho, so who knows.

Indeed...see what they can do if they apply themselves? Demolition by neglect it would seem!

@Doom, I think the town of Bowmanville is hoping to save on demolition costs by letting the local youth do most of the work?!
