Ponsonby began as a small community around 1840 known originally as Thorpville. It was an overnight stop for stagecoach travellers heading to the Queen's Bush.

A post office opened in 1853.

By the 1860's Ponsonby had a hotel, general store, blacksmith shop and wagon shop. The post office moved into the general store in 1853.

f.o.s. K now it's gone altogether!! OAP just deleted it...but mobileworks has this cemetery in the Ponsonby Hotel location as well.
