The most eastern point of North America, Cape Spear is not only a National Historic site, it was also a strategic spot on the coast of Newfoundland to protect the valuable harbour of St. John's.

During the Second World War, Cape Spear was key location along the convoy routes in the Battle of the Atlantic. To provide protection against German U-boats, a gun battery and garrison was constructed at the tip of the Cape. The garrison featured underground bunkers, hidden passageways, and two 10 inch guns. Today this outpost is still part of the landscape and tourists are welcome to explore the guns and the dark confines of the bunkers.

There is also a smaller gun placement at the entrance to St. John's harbour, although this is fenced off from the public and out of bounds.

Cape Spear itself, with its beautiful lighthouse is a must visit on any trip to Newfoundland, and having an abandoned gun battery makes it even more of an attraction.
