The (a)Silver Queen Mine(a) is located within Murphys Point Provincial Park on Big Rideau Lake. From 1903 to about 1920, this was a working mica, feldspar and apatite mine that provided an extra source of income for many of this area’s local farmers and families. The ore was shipped to markets by barge from Hogg Bay along the Rideau Canal as well as by train from Perth. The Silver Queen is an important piece of our history because it symbolizes the hardships and importance of small-scale mining in this southern extension of the Canadian Shield.
