Napier was first settled around 1830 by a group of disbanded British military officers. It is located on Bear Creek. By 1838 Napier already had a school, church and a military academy. Napier was surrounded by walnut trees, so in the 1850's they put up saw and grist mills. A store and post office was added at about the same time. Interesting to note that one of the settlers had set up a steam powered saw mill and grist mill at some point. In the 1870's the population grew up over 200. From what I've read Napier continued to grow and became a small manufacturing center. As with many small centers, it was the coming of the railroad that hurt Napier. It made it more difficult to compete with those on the railway line. The photos I have here are some of what is left.
