A lonely cemetery, resting out in the middle of a farm field. Surrounded by a fence to protect from the plow and establish boundaries of the final remaining remnant of the pioneer settlement of Black's Corners. The community was first established by Irish settlers in 1825, while the oldest burial seems to be from 1846. I am certain that other deaths occurred in those twenty years, but maybe not resting in this plot. The original headstones have been moved to one corner of the burying ground, and mounted together, horizontally in concrete. I question the wisdom of this method of preservation, as it seems the elements would reek havoc on stones that were originally meant to last forever by being erected vertically. The important aspect of this, is that someone took the time to save the stones and preserve the history found here. A more modern memorial stone was erected in 2005, to pay tribute to the pioneer families of this small farming community. The text on the marker reads as follows:

DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE FAMILIES WHO PIONEERED AT BLACK'S CORNER IN 1825, AND WHO REST IN THIS CEMETERY

BLACK, COPELAND, KENNEDY, LOVE & WRIGHT

PLACED HERE IN LOVE BY THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN BLACK AND ELIZABETH TRIMBLE 1778 - 1871 OF COUNTY DOWN, IRELAND

ERECTED 2005

The oldest cemetery I personally know of has a head stone from 1799.

Unfortunately, many of these Old Cemeteries are disappearing every day, the Stones being pulled up, often destroyed, and the land ploughed over for the sake of convenience.
