A nice old cemetery outside the nice old town of Sheffield, opened 1810, with some headstones now unreadable. Rev. John Cornell founded Sheffield in 1809 from New York and became a preacher in 1812. In 1832 the post office opened. The population in 1857 was only 150 but had several businesses and even a surgeon, which would definitely improve your chances of survival, back in the day. Most of the population have been farmers.

It's kind of sad that some of the stones are impossible to read, considering most people want their lives remembered somehow.

Yes it is, and that is one of the reasons I do this, to get the pioneer ones that still can be read before they are too weathered [from design or poor materials, sandstone , wood etc. or moss] and preserve them here. Some are very interesting and sometimes hard to see or find. I can sometimes bring out the letters with some programs but hopefully Hamilton has a master list.
