The Spanish River Lumber Co. operated between 1882 and the 1940's. Their main source for harvesting lumber was from the Sauble River, among others. They operated many lumber mills across Ontario. One of their mills situated near Lake Huron, was that of Spanish Mills.
It began around 1868 when a mill was built under the name of Spanish River. The site includeed a dozen homes, boarding house, cook house, general store, school and church. In it's prime, the area contained approximately 200 residents.
In 1906 the mill was rename to Spanish Mills. As a result of the depression the mill closed in 1927 and the equipment was shipped to another of their mills in Skead. The workers homes were left to mother nature to consume.
The Spanish River Lumber Company's operations in Skead continued to operate until approx. 1930, when it too succumbed to the Depression. The mill remained vacant for nearly thirteen years thereafter.
Directions: Spanish Mills was located on Aird Island. Their Skead mill was located in the town of Skead. Today you can find a few old buildings in the Skead area but most of the remains have vanished.
