This former railway line was used by CN Rail up until 2003 when it was rezoned by the City of Greater Sudbury for use by an adjacent lumber yard. The site is littered with debris including railway ties, railway car parts and signaling equipment.
Stacks of concrete ties can be found along the way, originally intended for use under the railway tracks. When it was found that the concrete crumbled under the weight of the trains their use was abandoned. The ties were made of inferior concrete and were unusable (Lafarge in S.S.M.). Concrete ties are still in use in colder areas than Sudbury such as Gogama, Nakina, Redditt, and to Hornepayne. On occasions additional rolling stock was stored here from the spillover at the Capreol yards. The most interesting portion of this adventure, the abandoned railway car was present during May of 2007. During OAP’s (website) visit in October 2007 it was nowhere to be found. The railway tracks are covered in rust, testament to their years of not being used. |
