As is the case with many ghost towns today, Boston Creek began a small railside town with the newly constructed Temiskiming and Northern Ontario Railways passing through (1906). It grew to include a school, stores, boarding house and workers homes.
In the 1930's gold was discovered at Boston Creek and the prospectors soon arrived in hopes of striking it rich.
As with many mining towns, Boston Creek's demise began with the Second World War. The crumbling school house remains as well as some old workers homes. The Adams Mine is now being used as a solid waste site. There is a large controversy as to what should be done with the land. Residents don't want it used as a garbage dump, while the property owner does.
Boston Creek is located approximately 10 kilometres southeast of the Town of Kirkland Lake in the geographic township of Boston in the District of Timiskaming.
Reader Comment: ---------------- I grew up in the now ghostted community of Tarzwell, ON. Back in the 1940's we used to shop in Boston Creek, because the 2 stores in Tarzwell carried only basic items and groceries, while Boston Creek still counted 7 stores and Fresh Produce.
After the road was graded regurlary in 1944 it was possible to drive out there year round. In 1948 the store in operations at Boston Creek were. McMillan's Grocery Store, Chapman's Hardware.ÿ Patterson Cooper Mine office, Noranda Mines LTD, Bohuk Towing and Garage. Hendy Jack Grocery Store and genral merchandise and ice cream bar, and Moe St Clairs Pool room and store.ÿ Alexander Murray ran the small hotel/tavern in town and had 6 rooms on top for lodging.
Boston Creek at that time still counted a sawmill 3 miles out of town (Domtar), and about 260 residents on its 8 street plan town site.
In 1945 the post office was in the McMillan's where his wife Audrey would sort the mail.ÿ In 1951 it moved in Deams store for the next 12 years.ÿ With the Weatherheads later sorting the mail after they bought the store in 1962.ÿ Deams had bought out from Thomas Cass who bought Hendy's store in 1949.
The large brick station was built in 1920 and burnt down in 1928. They replaced it with a smaller wooden building.ÿ It was closed in 1965 and removed to our property in Tarzwell (1973) where it now stands on the lake where all the cottages are today (just behind the old Tazwell Town site.
My father worked at the Auspico Gold Mines 6 miles South West of Boston back in 1926-29.ÿ The small mine employed 46 men and ran a 200 ton mill on the claim.ÿ They managed to produced 11,000 ounces of gold before they close in 1929.ÿ It was later reopened as the Del ORO Mine and operated by Fitzback Mining Syndicate.ÿ They went bust in a year (1932?) after producing 100 oz of gold. ----------------------- Good afternoon! Alex Lumsden again
Mom was born in Dane, Ontarrio in 1911.ÿ Her father homesteaded in a small place called Mindoka.ÿ Mom went to school there, but in 1920 her father sold the farm and opened a store in Boston Creek.ÿ The store was built in 1921, and was expanded in 1926, and again in 1934.ÿ In 1921 Arthur Miller (her dad) called the store Miller's Grocery.ÿ In 1922 the Mary-Cove Hotel was built largely through his labour.ÿ It burnt down in Spetember 1923, and was rebuilt on a smaller scale (maybe 8 rooms or so).
Arthur sold the store in 1927 to Mark Stanton, of Patterson NJ who held an intrest on the Boston-Barr property.ÿ They produced some gold but the mine failed and Stanton sold the store and mine to Sid Bowden, of Kirkland Lake.ÿ The store burnt down in 1939.
Arthur Miller also opened a garage in 1926, just below the ridge coming to town (accross the road from the station) built in 1925 as a Feed Store for the work horses, the building was renovated, and 2 gas pumps were installed. It was called Miller's Esso and Mechanical Service.ÿ He sold out around 1934 and a year or two later moved to the Pamour Mine near Porcupine and ran the store, after the mine opened there.ÿ Mom was married to Dad by then and they were operating the large general store in Shillington.ÿ After the fire a year after they took over they left Shillignton.
Hope this helps a little!
