In 1912, a small Kirkland Lake mine developed by "La Mine d'or Huronia" (Huronia Mine) began extracting gold from Beaverhouse Lake. Two shafts were sunk to explore the gold and copper veins within the ground. The mine operated from 1912-1919. A post office was established in 1914 but closed in 1917.
After 1919 the name was changed to Argonaut Mine. In 1919, Argonaut Gold Mines established a small mill that burned down in 1921, was rebuilt and continued to operate until 1928. The mine itself continued until approximately 1939. By this time, about $800,000 in gold has been extracted. From 1935 until 1964 various companies would explore the area but no gold production was reported. Then, in 1964, Upper Canada Gold Mines Limited purchased the property and began to mine even deeper into the shafts. The main shaft was now 650 feet deep, By the time the mine closed, an estimated 140,000 ounces of gold had been extracted. Queenston Mines Limited bought the land from Upper Canada Resources in 1977. Argonaut is roughly northeast of Lebel-Sur-Quevillon, close to the Quebec border. |
